Q & A
How does it feel to have this story published for the first time?
Really great! It's a bit different from my usual stuff, so it's cool to see it accepted.
What inspired the idea for your story?
It started with an image, an eerie looking young girl standing on the gunwale of a ship. This combined with the concept of the classical siren or neriad.
We know that writing can be a tumultuous journey with a lot of obstacles, what is your kryptonite as a writer?
I am so easially distracted that it's not even funny. Sometimes I literally unplug the internet to write, it's the only way.
Clearly, you’ve succeeded at writing a captivating story for GrendelPress, but we all start somewhere. What advice would you give yourself as a young writer?
Keep writing and reading, and have confidence in yourself.
We’d like to argue that every good story makes both the author and the readers feel something. What perspectives or beliefs have you challenged with your story?
The biggest perspective I tried to challenge here is that a siren can only draw from a particular type of desire. I've always thought there were more insidious ways of drawing someone in, wants and needs that go far beyond the physical.
Tell us about your favorite author. What about their book(s) call to you and how do they inspire your own writing?
Lewis Carroll is probably my biggest influence. Having the Wonderland novels read to me as a child opened up a whole doorway of imagination in me, a doorway to a world of whimsey where anything can happen.
My favorite living writer is Caitlin R Kiernan. They creature cosmic dread in a way that I've never seen before, and many of their characters are outsiders, which appeal to me a lot more than the "normal people" that are so often the protagonists of such stories.

What do you love most about your story’s genre?
I don't know what draws me, again and again, to horror. My family has always been big on the genre (as well as Halloween) so it's been a constant in my life since I was a small child.
What are some other genres you’d like to break into and why?
I am currently working on a Post-Apocalyptic adventure novel, which I hope will be the start of a series. I've also always wanted to try my hand at a full-blown Gothic novel some day.
If you had to pick another story of yours to share with your readers, what would it be?
I'm especially proud of my longish short story "First Night Out".
