Q & A
What inspired the idea for your story?
What happens when the villain gets what he wants? I was having a conversation with my father about American's near constant rejection of contentment. I sometimes see ambition as a disease that consumes our ability to feel happiness. Drugghod says as much in the story, calling ambition that of "earthly desires."
We know that writing can be a tumultuous journey with a lot of obstacles, what is your kryptonite as a writer?
I have a very intensive and physical job. It frequently keeps me away from the creative side of things.
Clearly, you’ve succeeded at writing a captivating story for GrendelPress, but we all start somewhere. What advice would you give yourself as a young writer?
Get a routine and stick to it. Eventually it becomes second nature.
We’d like to argue that every good story makes both the author and the readers feel something. What perspectives or beliefs have you challenged with your story?
I am incredibly interested in the concept of platonic love and the depths that we will go for those privileged few we call "friends." I have been exalted to have breezed through life with a few such folk, and my life has been illuminated because of it. To use the lens of fantasy to shine a light on one of these such bonds asks the viewers the question "what would I do for my friends?"
Tell us about your favorite author. What about their book(s) call to you and how do they inspire your own writing?
I did not truly understand writing until I read The Illustrated Manby Ray Bradbury. To so seamlessly weave together short stories into a cohesive tonal narrative was crippling. After years of stagnant creativity, it launched me towards daily writing routines and where I am today as a writer.
What do you love most about your story’s genre?
Fantasy will always be such an open book! There are so many familiar elements of fantasy in this story, and though the genre certainly propels the plot forward it is the characters and their bonds that affect the emotional toll of the narrative.
What are some other genres you’d like to break into and why?
I would love to publish a collection of my science fiction stories about class struggles.
If you had to pick another story of yours to share with your readers, what would it be?
My comic book The Last Herald is available from Odyssey Comics. A priest must travel across the continent to fulfill his last act as Herald of Saints and Demons: save the lineage of the greatest family in history.
