Q & A
How does it feel to have this story published for the first time?
I feel honored, as the story had been passed on by other markets and I was wanting badly to see this one in print.
What inspired the idea for your story?
For this particular story, my idea had come to me simply to write a horror story about a little ghost girl that haunted a man on a playground. I remember the idea slowly building itself from a rough outlined foundation, as is the usual case with all my stories.
We know that writing can be a tumultuous journey with a lot of obstacles, what is your kryptonite as a writer?
Keeping focus on the story itself, and making sure that certain elements are lining up the way they should.
Tell us about your favorite author. What about their book(s) call to you and how do they inspire your own writing?
I’ve always been partial to authors in the vein of Lovecraft, and none so much as Clive Barker. I have always loved the elegant prose, reminiscent of Poe, combined with his bizarre tales that express the lovecraftian elements.
Clearly, you’ve succeeded at writing a captivating story for GrendelPress, but we all start somewhere. What advice would you give yourself as a young writer?
Worry not about who may or may not take it. As I said before, this very story WAS passed on by other markets before being accepted into this title. Sometimes when one door is slammed in your face as a writer, it’s so that you’ll look around and find the one true door that’s truly for you.
We’d like to argue that every good story makes both the author and the readers feel something. What perspectives or beliefs have you challenged with your story?
With my story, I believe I challenge the idea of speculative surrealism. As well as this, I believe I have challenged the idea of repetition, the idea of change in one’s routine, however mundane, being a negative aspect of life.
What do you love most about your story’s genre?
The thrill it can give, as well as the uniquely artistic charm horror has in its expression.
What are some other genres you’d like to break into and why?
Unsure yet!
If you had to pick another story of yours to share with your readers, what would it be?
If I could share any one other chilling testament of mine, it would be a title I included in my first self published book, “Damned Whispers” titled, “The monster under the bed”.
Synopsis:
After his parents were involved in a car accident, little Timothy Barnes grows up in the care of his aunt. Life moves on, and he’s happy, until he begins to hear strange noises underneath his bed. Hidden horrors break free, and a frightening, soul-rending truth is revealed...
