Q & A

Origins and Inspirations

What inspired you to write Masks?

I’m a huge fan of slasher horror. I love the cheese, the schlock, the campy over-the-topness of it. I love how, as the franchise progresses, the killer becomes more and more unkillable, even if they started out as a regular human. I wanted to write something about why that might be, and kind of conflate it with the idea of the bogeyman.

How long have you been writing, and what is your writing process like?

I’ve been writing since I was a child. I tend to be a pantser, rather than a plotter, and I’ll write the first draft as quick as I can and then go back over to shape it into something as good as I can make it. I also like a small amount of distraction – so playing a video game while working on a draft is good for me.

What kind of research did you have to do for the book?

I had to do a lot of research into the various slasher franchises I reference in the book. I wanted to make sure I got those details right so eagle-eyed fans can pick up the references. I also had to do a bit of research into various types of bodily harm with various implements, and what that might look like. Fortunately, my sister is a doctor, and puts up with my weird requests for information!

What are some of your favorite horror movies, and why?

In terms of slasher horror…I’m a huge Friday 13th fan. It’s the iconic one for me. Outside of that, my most beloved horror movie is The Thing. Some other favourites, in no particular order are: Aterrados, The Borderlands, The Endless, Coherence…there are a bunch more that I’m forgetting right now.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Hard to say really, since everyone’s process is so different. I guess finding what works for you and honing that. Accept that you’re never done learning, that there’ll always be new techniques to try and ways to improve. Remember: the quality of the story has to come first. Put ego aside and write the best story you can.

What are your hobbies outside of writing?

I’m a big TTRPG player, love video games and board games, read a lot of comics. I also love getting out into nature for walks, hitting the gym – a varied bunch of hobbies, none of which I seem to have much time for!

What are you working on now?

I had another short horror collection that I’m trying out. Also a Choose Your Own Adventure-style horror, which is super experimental and may not actually work at all. For those interested in horror that has that format, I’m going to quickly plug Trve Cvlt by Michael Bettendorf. It’s a fantastic read.

Thank you for joining us on this peek into the world of Masks and its fascinating creator. From the slasher movies that shaped their imagination to the creative experiments they’re currently exploring, this author’s journey is a testament to the power of curiosity and passion. Don’t forget to pick up a copy of Masks if you haven’t yet—it’s a chilling ride that will keep you guessing till the last page. And as the Jim wisely advises, always put the story first, because in horror, just like in life, it’s the twists that make the tale unforgettable. Happy reading—and maybe keep the lights on tonight!
